Summer Driving Tips
With summer in full swing, many Californians are driving more than ever. Family vacations, summer road trips and our favorite visits to Grandma’s house for those delicious cookies. But before you do any driving here are some helpful tips that can help get your car in shape for the warm weather.
Hot weather is very rough on cars. The higher temperature’s cause the fluids and lubricants to break down quickly leaving your cars vital parts unprotected. By following your cars regular maintenance schedule and taking the following precautions your next road trip will be a blast.
1. Inspections prior to leaving.
Get your car inspected prior to leaving your home. Getting your car repaired on the road can be costly, especially if your go to mechanic is not there.
2. Check your A/C system.
No one likes to sweat at the stop lights in your car. Why not spend the extra 20 minutes and have a qualified professional check your A/C system. You can even do it yourself.
3. Check your battery and cables.
The last thing you want to hear is the clicking noise of a bad battery. How weather can severely shorten the life of a car battery and leave you stranded.
4. Check those brakes.
Brakes are a vital part of the car that often gets over looked. You can take it to almost any repair shop to have them inspected.
5. Changed your engine oil.
Changing your engine oil to manufacture recommendations is the best thing you can for your car. While doing that check your coolant, brake, transmission, wiper and power steering fluids.
6. Tire pressure.
Check the pressure in all of your tires, including that spare you forgot about in the trunk. Uneven or server wear marks on the tires mean that its either time for a rotation of a new set of those Michelin Pilots.
7. Your car’s lights.
Double check to make sure that all of your cars lights inside and out are working. The last thing you need is a ten dollar fixing ticket in a county far away because your license plate bulb went out. Save yourself the trouble and add some safety back in your car.
8. Checking that dang air filter.
Changing your air filter is one of the easiest maintenance jobs on your car. A dirty air filter doesn’t allow your engine to breather properly which in turn causes your car to get lower MPGs.
9. Check engine light.
People often think that a check engine light is always a small problem. This is sometimes true and sometimes not. Image a “small problem” staying on over 500 miles, causing other parts to fail. Now your motor needs to be replaced because of that little light you wanted to forget. Make the smart move and have it checked out.
